Düsseldorf-based insurer sends a clear message for equal opportunity
4th International ARAG Day Strengthens Access to Justice
For the fourth time, ARAG is hosting the International ARAG Day, sending a powerful message in support of equal access to justice. On and around September 25, the insurance group and its international entities are taking action by offering free advice and information to people with limited access to qualified legal counsel. The program is once again complemented by initiatives organized by ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG and ARAG Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG.
People who do not know their rights cannot assert them, and those who cannot afford legal counsel are often left without protection when it matters most. This is precisely where the ARAG Day comes in. As part of this year’s event, ARAG SE once again expanded its range of free legal advice services: External attorneys were available to clients of the food bank Düsseldorfer Tafel e. V. at four distribution sites, including the established locations in Garath and Hassels; for the first time also locations in Derendorf and Gerresheim. Families in contact with SOS Children’s Villages in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, and Essen also received free legal advice during the event. In addition, ARAG once again supported a joint initiative by Senioren-Rechtshilfe (Legal Aid for Senior Citizens) and Mietrecht (Tenancy) Law Clinic Cologne, where students assisted experienced attorneys in advising senior citizens and other interested individuals. At the ARAG Day, the focus was in particular on questions related to social welfare law, tenancy law, and employment law.
International: A Wide Range of Programs Across ARAG Countries
ARAG’s international entities took part in the ARAG Day through initiatives tailored to the needs of their markets. ARAG Italy partnered with AIAS Verona, an organization that has supported people with disabilities since 1964, particularly children with Down syndrome or autism. The program focused on legal questions related to social benefits, powers of attorney, and guardianship. In Austria, ARAG Day was aimed at recent high school graduates confronting legal questions about leases, college, and buying a vehicle for the first time. ARAG USA worked with Iowa Legal Aid, United Way, and other local organizations to provide people in need in Des Moines with free assistance in preparing important legal documents.
Access to Justice at the Heart of ARAG’s Corporate Philosophy
The ARAG Day embodies the idea that has shaped the company for more than 90 years: making access to justice easier for everyone. Company founder Heinrich Faßbender pursued the goal of making legal support available to as many people as possible. “We are carrying our founding idea forward by helping people who simply cannot afford qualified legal counsel. Together with our partner organizations, the ARAG Day enables us to offer the legal support they need. In this way, people can obtain free information on legal issues and receive initial, easily accessible guidance,” explains Isabel Flaskamp, Vice President for Access to Justice at ARAG SE and the lead organizer of ARAG Day.
Dedicated Initiatives by Group Companies Outside the Legal Insurance Business
ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG (ARAG Health) focused on health for the ARAG Day. In partnership with the nonprofit organization DEIN MÜNCHEN, students from the middle school on Simmernstraße in Munich took part in hands-on workshops. Topics ranged from learning strategies to prevent academic stress and bullying to healthy sleep habits.
ARAG Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG is the property and casualty insurer of the ARAG Group and Germany’s largest sports insurer. In this role, it partnered with the Safety in Sports foundation to offer two free webinars for sports clubs. Topics included safe sports facilities, injury prevention, and safety management in everyday club operations. As a special highlight, ARAG Allgemeine gave sports clubs the opportunity to win professional support throughout a certification process.: The winning club, Frankfurter Turn- und Sport-Gemeinschaft 1847 J.P., will receive expert guidance on its path toward earning the “Safe Sports Club” designation.
