Incorporation

In 2007, ARAG acquired shares in HELP Forsikring and thereby entered the Norwegian legal insurance market. Historically, this market had offered limited potential for legal insurers due to the strong role of the welfare state. Although legal expenses insurance had existed in Norway since the 1960s, the coverage was limited and typically provided only as a supplementary benefit in composite insurance policies. HELP Forsikring AS had already been present in the Norwegian market since 2005 with dedicated legal insurance products, which provided ARAG with a strong starting point. Since its establishment, HELP Forsikring AS has provided protection and support in legal matters for individuals, trade union members, telco customers, and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Growth and development

HELP’s legal services department includes more than 220 lawyers. New product development and sustained business growth have resulted in several successful legal insurance offerings. These include legal insurance for home buyers, providing assistance in contractual matters, and family legal protection, which delivers legal services across key legal areas for members of major Norwegian labor unions. For unions, HELP’s family legal protection has become an important recruitment tool. Maintaining customer satisfaction above 90 percent is therefore essential to continued growth, both for the unions and for HELP Forsikring AS.

In 2012, the ARAG Group subsidiary established a branch in Sweden, paving the way for further growth across the Nordic region. HELP Forsikring AS’s growth has been driven primarily by cooperation agreements with numerous trade unions and an increasing share of the real estate legal insurance market. At the end of 2013, the ARAG Group acquired all shares in HELP Forsikring AS. Since 2015 in Denmark, and since 2025 in Finland, HELP Forsikring has also provided legal protection, mainly for telco customers in the Danish and Finnish markets.

HELP Forsikring AS today

Today, 18 Norwegian labor unions provide family legal protection insurance to their members, giving more than 480,000 Norwegian families access to legal protection through insurance. In addition, more than half of all Norwegian home buyers purchase legal protection from HELP. HELP also offers legal protection against cyberbullying and ID theft through cooperation with the telco industry. Across its Nordic activities, more than 5.5 million customers are entitled to legal protection from HELP Forsikring AS.
