Incorporation ARAG plc

ARAG plc was incorporated in 2006 and quickly developed a comprehensive range of legal expenses insurance and insured assistance products for families, motorists and businesses, as well as a reputation for innovation, flexibility and quality of service.

Growth and development

The company grew steadily over the following years to become one of the largest and most successful legal insurance businesses in the UK, while assisting in the acquisition and launch of ARAG operations in Canada and Ireland.

Unlike in most other countries, legal insurance is almost exclusively provided as an “add-on” to household, motor or commercial insurance, in the UK. As a result, ARAG has developed a formidable reputation in the insurance market and particularly strong relationships with insurance brokers, insurers, managing general agents and other intermediaries who provide its cover to their customers.

Another feature of legal insurance in the UK is the market for “after-the-event” cover, where the risks of losing a legal case can be insured after an incident has occurred, at the start of legal proceedings. ARAG’s strong commitment to extending access to justice has driven the company to develop a strong presence in this market, particularly for enabling the victims of medical negligence to seek redress.

In 2024, ARAG SE completed the acquisition of its most significant competitor, DAS UK, to create the largest legal expenses insurance business in the UK market.

ARAG is now the leading legal expenses insurer in the UK, protecting millions of families and hundreds of thousands of businesses against everyday legal risks and providing legal advice, support and resources to all its policyholders.

The company is still driven by the same, fundamental commitment to extending access to justice and handles more than 50,000 legal claims every year, many of them through its own law firm, ARAG Law.
