ARAG entered the Spanish legal insurance market in 1977 and founded one of its first international subsidiaries in Barcelona. Later reincorporated as ARAG Compañía Internacional de Seguros y Reaseguros S.A., the firm began with automotive and motorists’ legal insurance and later expanded its portfolio to include legal insurance for owners of real estate.

In 1987, ARAG merged with Spanish market leader “CAP” (La Compania de Asistencia y Proteccion Internacional, S.A.) to form “CAP-ARAG,” thereby enlarging its sales network substantially. “CAP-ARAG” was renamed ARAG Compañía Internacional de Seguros y Reaseguros S.A. in the year 2000.

ARAG Spain now has over 17 million customers. With a market share of about 50%, it is now the leader in the Spanish legal insurance market. A total of 466 employees handle an average of 400,000 insurance claims and respond to some 55,000 telephone requests for legal advice per year.
