The Austrian legislature enacted uniform regulations for legal insurance – comparable to those in Germany - in 1965. Eleven years later, in 1976, ARAG Austria was founded by ARAG Deutschland and Bundesländer-Versicherung (later UNIQA). The brand name at the time was BV-ARAG.

Following a change of ownership in 2000, ARAG Austria is a 100% subsidiary of the Düsseldorf Group and is now active at the international level itself.
In 2004, ARAG Austria entered the Slovenian market through the acquisition of the business operations of ARAG zavarovanje pravne zaščite d.d., which was then established as a fully-owned subsidiary of ARAG Österreich Allgemeine Rechtsschutzversicherungs-AG.

ARAG in Austria today
The company surpassed the 50-million-Euro mark in portfolio volume in the first quarter of 2010. ARAG achieved a market share of about 12 percent by end of 2010, which puts ARAG Austria in third place among Austrian legal insurers.
